Quite possibly the cutest afternoon tea in London.
Going to South Kensington is already a very civilised experience when you spend most of your time in the countryside. Going for a very special afternoon tea was a real treat.
The fabulous building that dominates Queen's Gate in full Regency charm is the home to Kensington Hotel, part of the Doyle Collection, the brand behind some of the most stylish boutique hotels in the capital.
For such an unforgettable experience, I took my daughter who is a tough and fussy food critic. She loves cooking and is interested in culinary TV shows like no one her age. She, I was sure, must be the perfect company for the trendy London Landmarks afternoon tea.
We were greeted by the lovely staff and Andrei, the hotel manager and Ilaria, at the restaurant looked after us from beginning to end, making the whole experience absolutely wonderful.
As my daughter and I waited for our table, we were offered little treats and some special touches like a colouring book with all the famous London landmarks we aware about to eat. Some hot chocolate for the little lady and quickly enough our table was ready for us. Typical: we could have waited an eternity in the fabulous Victorian hall with the most exquisite staircase, but due to their exceptional service, we were seated without any delay at the very elegant Town House restaurant, an airy and bright space filled with lavish pieces of furniture and a very sophisticated vibe. The Kensington isn't a five star hotel, it is a boutique one, but we can't really wish for anything else in terms of service and fabulous interior.
Our afternoon tea was served by their friendly staff who is clearly so proud to work there. We were taken on a London tour by Ilaria, who looked after us, explaining what we were about to experience. I love their version of steak ale pie, fish and chips and stilton and broccoli tart. These little bite size treats were bursting with flavour and the stilton and broccoli tart had the most perfect pastry around it, a buttery and crumbly very fine frame for the flavoursome filling.
Excellent quality tea, hot chocolate for my daughter and a strong and bold espresso whilst we then, tucked in to their main act: the bespoke London eye wheel that holds a selection of traditional and fruit scones, wrapped in a crisp cotton napkin, accompanied by fresh clotted cream and raspberry jam.
Perhaps the real stars of the show are the dessert shaped in London's most recognizable landmarks and monuments. Ilaria explained our adorable Big Ben was a fine buttery pastry lemon tart, the cute red telephone box was rhubarb mousse, the Gherkin was made of delicious white and milk chocolate and finally the decadent Shard built with slated caramel walls and chcolate ganache. The portions are extremelly generous and all comes in double, so needless to say we were unable to show to the chef how much we loved every single bit of it. Not to mention their delicious fresh and delicately cut sandwiches. I highlight the coronation chicken, my absolute favourite.
We were sad to leave, as so much was left untouched. The hotel does offer to pack the leftovers in elegant boxes, but even if the intention is good, it was hot day and I am not sure how those masterpieces were to keep as perfect as they were, considering the London underground was where we were heading next.
Nonetheless, what a gorgeous treat for adults and children.
And our goodie bag was adorable too. (sorry, the box of chocolate doesn't appear in the picture as it was eaten before this publication...)
